U.S.: Becoming Vegetarian
I re-realized the other day that I spend a significant portion of each passing hour thinking about food. Thoughts constantly run through my mind, thoughts regarding the last meal I ate, the next meal I am going to eat, what I am going to make for supper tomorrow, what I am going to order at restaurant X when my friends and I decide to go there, etc. It's a fact: I love food.
Our food choices can say a lot about us, reflecting our culture, values, and lifestyles. We make decisions based on the season, availability, religious practices, diet trends, and simply what tastes good and satisfies our palate. Right now there is nothing quite as satisfying as some good produce from the local farmer's market. All of the fresh fruits and vegetables are a real treat.
If all of my friends were to jump off a cliff, I probably wouldn't join them; however, if my friends decided to adopt a vegetarian diet, my chances of following them are greater. Three weeks ago I took a look at myself in the mirror and my reflection told me, "Today is the day you officially become a vegetarian." Without much question or hesitation, I replied, "Alright. Let's do it." Why? Just because. To satisfy the urge to try. You never know if you'll like something until you try it.
I've been doing my research as I go, delving into this new vegetarian adventure. I would say that my justification for being a vegetarian can be summed up as a way to be the best me that I can be. The reasons for this include benefits for my own health, living sustainably for the whole earth and its people, and respect for life concerning fair treatment of animals. It has been a fulfilling adventure so far - and I don't see it ending any time soon. Buen provecho!
