U.S.: Packing for the Peace Corps

Packing my entire life for the next two years shouldn't be so overwhelming. I've been reviewing packing lists and thinking about what is going to fit into my permitted 100 pounds of checked luggage in combined linear dimensions of 107" and have come to the conclusion that a decent amount of planning is required for this whole packing extravaganza. It also makes me think about what is absolutely necessary for my day-to-day survival. Perhaps cutting the clutter is a good lesson for travelers and non-travelers alike.

I recently read that U.S. citizens comprise 4.5% of the world population yet consume at least 20% of the world's resources. For me, numbers like that do not suggest a globally responsible and sustainable lifestyle. How much of the "stuff" that we buy is truly necessary?

I can't say I fully understand what it is like to live as a minimalist, but I do know that I like to keep things simple. As much as I would like to pack my entire closet, I know that some items won't be necessary for daily life in Central America. For example, I have a feeling that I can forget about packing heavy fleece jackets, stocking hats, and thick wool socks.

In the next three weeks one of my projects is to strategize my packing. I'll keep you posted on my progress
