Nicaragua: Training So Far
Excited. Confused. Overwhelmed. Anxious. Tired. Hot. Sweaty.
These adjectives only begin to describe how the newest batch of Peace Corps Nicaragua trainees are currently feeling. The past days of training have been filled with youth group meetings, school meetings, language classes, technical training, and integration into our host communities. Our schedule is full and fulfilling at the same time. What have we learned so far?
- There is a lot of opportunity for development within this country and the youth especially hold enthusiasm for making that happen.
- "Hay más tiempo que vida." That is the Nicaraguan phrase meaning there is more time than life...basically, what's the rush?
- It is definitely possible to fit five grown-ups into a moto-taxi, which are the popular three-wheeled modes of transportation around here. Three adults can comfortably ride at any given time; however if one person shares the driver's seat and the other four cram in the back seat (this usually involves someone sitting on someone else's lap), five can easily fit.
- If one trainee's host mother prepares her trainee a daily bag of fruit to have as a snack, the other trainees will surely be jealous that said trainee didn't have to buy her own bananas.
- Lastly, "Semana Santa" aka Holy Week Nicaraguan style involves either lots of going to church or lots of tanning at the beach. The days are only getting hotter as we approach April and May, supposedly the two hottest months of the year.
The photos below show one of the many Holy Week processions in my town, one of the town's Catholic churches, the newest group of business volunteers in Nicaragua, and Andres the cat...suffering in the heat. Enjoy!
