Nicaragua: A Trip to the Lake

"We are on a family vacation and we are having a good time," said the annoyed mother to her whining 11-year-old child through gritted teeth.

Isn't that the ever-so-true picture of forced family fun experienced time and time again? Let's be honest, family time is great; however there is also a point when you've simply had too much. Such was the case yesterday as I went with my host family on an outing to the lake. Picture the grandmother blaming her grandchild for making everybody late and for forgetting to bring the bread and mangos, meanwhile the grandchild does the same in return, blaming the grandmother for being too darn forgetful and demanding. How do I fit into the scene? I'm just a happy foreigner who wants everyone to get along and be friends.

But don't get me wrong, the day was enjoyed by all despite a few little disagreements. We packed 17 human beings into a van and arrived at Lake Nicaragua two hours after our early-morning departure. At the lake I spent at least three hours tickle-t-touch-gliding my heart out and giving swimming lessons.

On the return trip, the grandchild and grandmother were too tired to continue arguing. We arrived home slightly more bronzed than when we left and in a slightly more peaceful fashion, thank goodness.
