Nicaragua: Bakeries
The other day I arrived home to find a bag of bread and other baked goods waiting for me in my room. My host mother then informed me that my friend from the bakery had dropped by to give me this gift while I was out.
Now here's the rest of the story...
As one of my training projects I've chosen to get to know the local bakers and learn a little bit about their businesses. I must say I chose a great sector to research, judging by the amount of free bread I've been getting lately. This project has consisted of me spending lots of time sitting in two of the bakeries in town, asking lots of questions, and doing a lot of listening. Oh yes, and consuming lots of carbs. More than one should.
The bakeries here don't carry a regular supply of banana bread (can you believe that?) and the products don't compare to the goodness of my hometown Cold Spring Bakery, but they do suffice. I've developed a strong liking for baked goods with names such as "pillow" and "red mouth." My favorite is anything filled with pineapple.
So anyway, it's been a fun project. I've been given my daily bread, and then some.
