Nicaragua: Set fire to the rain

Rub-a-dub dub
Three girls full of suds
Under the pouring rain
Helping each other scrub...

Yes, that was a cheesy rendition of the classic three-men-in-a-tub children's rhyme and no, I am not apologizing for it. I simply couldn't resist, seeing that the scene which inspired my poetry was too darn cute.

There they were: My little neighbors using their resources well and taking advantage of a rainstorm to bathe. They shamelessly sang as they let the cool rainwater cleanse their bodies on the dirt road in front of their house. Only until one of them saw me pass by did they stop to give a bashful smile followed by embarrassed giggles.

It started raining last Friday evening and stopped about an hour ago. And what does three full days of rain bring? A flood warning, of course. The river is a-risin' and the people are evacuating little by little. My neighborhood has not been affected yet, but we will be next to go if the rain keeps coming.

Back in my Fargo flood-fighting days I learned how to make a sandbag, how to lay sandbags, and how to accept a day off of class to help the neighbors out. This time around there are no sandbags involved. Just a lot of white-flag waving and people moving away from the river and up the hill.

At this point my house remains unaffected. Any more rain, however, and I am going to need a canoe. Let's hope Mother Nature shows us a little mercy.
