Nicaragua: Whisper words of wisdom
Well, it has happened. Our well has run dry. According to my host mother, the household well has never run dry...at least not during the past two years. So now what? My host cousin brings us two or three buckets of water a day which we use for bathing, flushing the toilet, washing dishes, cooking, and maybe washing clothes if any droplets are left. I'm not exactly sure where he is finding this water; it could be that he goes to the river to fill up, or the water could be from another family's well that has not yet run dry.
A few years back when I was sitting through a Peace Corps info session on my college campus, the presenter said something along the lines of the following:
"A pessimist views the glass as half-empty; an optimist views it as half-full. A Peace Corps volunteer sees enough water to take a bath."
And now I fully comprehend what that statement is all about.
We are most definitely in the "dog days" of summer here. Meanwhile we all await the rainy season, many head to the river to cool off. I'll leave you with a few snapshots of our beloved rivers:
| During Holy Week my town hosts a swimming contest in the river. Here you can see the two leaders racing towards the finish. |
| Things are looking a little dry around these parts. |
