2019: The Year in Review
Before setting resolutions for the new year, reflecting on all that occurred in the year prior is necessary. So, here you have it: the abridged version of my 2019.
January: Devour 12 grapes in the first 12 seconds of the new year in Lloret de Mar, Spain. Hike Montjuic and Tibidabo in Barcelona. Fly across the Mediterranean to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Greet all the stray cats. Think long and hard about walls that have been built and destroyed throughout history.
February: Climb to the top of the fortress in Kotor, Montenegro. Cross six international borders in one day while learning about Bosnia and Herzegovina. Make the transatlantic trek back to Argentina. Sit in a river because it's so hot there's nothing else you could fathom doing. Set a wedding date.
March: Find a wedding dress designer. Take a dip into the translating profession. Attend the International Spanish Language Conference. See authors such as Mario Vargas Llosa, Sergio Ramirez, and Luisa Valenzuela in person. Buy all their books.
April: Do a bunch of paperwork. Continue planning a wedding. Lose your reception venue. Un-lose your reception venue two hours and countless phone calls/messages later. Visit Rafaela, Santa Fe. Add architecture, agriculture, community development, construction, and artificial intelligence to your translating portfolio.
May: Do more paperwork. Attend lots of pre-wedding meetings. Buy a refrigerator, washing machine, and dining room table. Attempt to work from home in the midst of a roof renovation. Spend lots of time in coffee shops. Become an expert in birth certificates.
June: Watch football. Celebrate Father's Day during a nationwide, day-long power outage. Add mining and cyber security to your portfolio. Host family in Cordoba. Get married.
July: Visit Iguazú. Say farewell to family. Move to a different house. Adopt a new kitten. Set up a decent home office. Mail immigration paperwork to the U.S. Spend hours with financial statements, lease agreements, and other legal documents. Add those to the portfolio.
August: Witness Argentinean primary elections. Watch the peso lose value again. Speak English with preteens in a swanky mountainside resort. Add pay stubs, transcripts, criminal records, and articles of incorporation to the portfolio.
September: Speak more English with more preteens. Attend a translation conference. Wallpaper a bedroom accent wall. Cheer the Coyotes to a championship victory. Continue building that portfolio.
October: Visit the Tigre delta of Buenos Aires. Pretend to know things about the medieval period while speaking English with Argentine adolescents. Celebrate turning 29 for the first time. Become an official resident of Argentina. Get a haircut. Get the cat spayed.
November: Visit Rosario. Admire the jacarandas and other brightly-flowered trees. Pay off all student loans. Make a pumpkin pie from scratch. Host a Thanksgiving dinner.
December: Decorate the Christmas tree. Battle with the post office. Go to a professional soccer match. Catch up on the latest seasons of your favorite Netflix series. Bake lots of cookies. Witness political unrest and scandal all around the world. Hope for something better in 2020.
