Mexico: Happiness in Food, Music, and Voting

We searched high and low for what seemed like hours and could not find a restaurant to satisfy our appetites. What were we searching for? Pizza. Why was it so difficult? That is a great question that remains unanswered. It was a Saturday night and once we did find a Domino's pizza place, we were told that orders were no longer being taken because it was too close to closing time. All we wanted was pizza; it shouldn't have been such a challenge. We continued on our search and by the time we were ready to faint from hunger pains we happened upon a traditional Mexican cantina. It wasn't pizza, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. After courses of traditional Mexican quesadillas, corn with mayonaisse and chili powder, shrimp soup, peanuts, and some Dos Equis, we came to the following one word conclusion: Happiness. The combination of delicious food, great service, excellent music, and fun company was enough to lighten our hearts.

Reflecting on happiness, it seems that in this past week each time I re-discovered "felicidad," it was somehow correlated to food and/or friends. With respect to food, happiness has come in the form of grapefruit-flavored water (the kind of grapefruit flavor that you get in those addicting Vitamin C cough drops), Nutella on toast, horchata (a sweet, cinnamon, rice milk), peanuts covered in chili powder accompanied by a Corona while watching the Mexican soccer team beat Costa Rica in the Estadio Azteca, or enjoying my first bowl of pozole (a soup consisting of giant corn kernels, pumpkin flowers, mushrooms, and radishes) to celebrate Independence Day Mexican style.

I also re-discovered happiness in music this past week. I made a friend who happens to have a piano. After sitting down and tickling the ivories for a bit you could say that I basically reached nirvana. Frequent visits to said friend's house may be in my future. Happiness, folks, is found in the little things.

One other note - I received my absentee ballot this past week for the election coming up in November. Receiving this ballot in September made me realize that I can make my selections, drop my ballot in the mail, and be done with all of the excitement way before the excitement is scheduled to occur. Also, Mexican TV channels don't play those ridiculous political ads bashing each candidate from now until November. One more reason to be happy.
