Mexico: Ice Skating
"I have a surprise for you," he said.
In an excited-nervous-curious sort of way I responded, "Okay..."
I didn't want to be "that girl" who asks every question imaginable until they figure out what the surprise actually is. I didn't even ask what I should wear, which was a big risk to take. For the record, my friend did instruct me to not wear a skirt. That led me to think maybe we were going to race bicycles, climb mountains, or ride horses. Some sort of activity, anyway.
Along those lines, I was right. We spent the day at one of Mexico City's ice arenas (I think there are between 2 and 5 in this country total, seriously). My friend definitely earned a ten on the rate-this-surprise scale. It was a day of firsts for both of us--my first time skating in Mexico and his first time skating ever. Needless to say we both enjoyed the experience.
I felt as if I was back in a Minnesota hockey arena...everything from the indoor temperature, the hockey smells, the concession stand, the wooden stadium seating...brought me back to the familiarity of old. The ice quality was pretty okay and they cleared the ice each hour to resurface with the vintage zamboni. The rental skates would not have passed as game-wearable, if you ask me. However, they sufficed for an afternoon of skating in Mexico.
Ice skating in Mexico. It's almost like Jamaican bob-sledding.
Hooray for familiar yet new experiences.
