Mexico: Olympic Soccer Champions
This morning if one were to go for a stroll around the city between 9-11am, they would have found every store, restaurant, and anything else closed. They would have also found themselves as the only person roaming the streets at that time. Everybody else was planted somewhere in front of a TV. The whole city put everything on hold for those few hours for one very important reason: the Mexican men's soccer team was playing in the Olympic final against Brazil. Neither team had previously won gold and word on the street was that if Mexico won against Brazil, then they really deserved it. We watched the game in nervous excitement (my host mother asking for God's help upon the Mexican team at least 20 times) and after a well-played match, Mexico won by a score of 2-1. What did that mean for all of the inhabitants of Mexico City? FIESTA!
Of course I set to the streets after the game to be a part of the celebration of Mexico's first gold medal in men's futbol. Picture green, white, and red everywhere, car horns, noisemakers, sombreros, and confetti. Here is a shot of everybody gathered near the "Angel of Independence":
In closing, I must share another story about my eyes. The conversation with my host brother went like this:
Him: Does the sun bother you?
Me: No, the sun doesn't bother me. I really like the sun. Why do you ask?
Him: Because of your eyes. I thought that since you have such light eyes the sun would bother you.
He proceeded to tell me that my eyes are muy padre...very cool.
